Shropshire is a county in the West Midlands region of England and bordering Wales to the west. Shropshire is one of England's most rural and sparsely populated counties.

The county was established during the division of Mercia into shires in the 10th century and after the Norman Conquest experienced significant developmentwhen the county estates were given to Norman Nobles and Lords. As a border county with Wales, the Normans had to defend their territories so they built castles, at least thirty two were built.
